Banner advertising is here to stay, we see banners all over the web. A successful banner design is one that attracts your attention in a way that is relevent to the target market and then gets them to click through to your website. In order to do this there must be some benefit for the consumer to click through. A lot of the time we see banner ads that are not pretty or interesting enough to look at them nevermind actually click through. Yawn, yawn. Actually good banner design is not that difficult if you apply these principles.

Banners are also useful on ones own site as a means to flag down specials and highlight new developments etc.
