Durban is South Africa's third-largest city and Africa's
busiest port. Blessed with a balmy tropical climate
and lovely beaches, the city and its coastal resorts
to the north and south are the country's premier holiday
destination.
- The 6km beachfront, known as the Golden Mile, offers
superb swimming and surfing, paddling pools, fishing
piers, amusement parks, crafts and flea markets, hotels,
restaurants and fast food outlets. And don't miss
a ride on one of the city's colourfully plumed rickshas
- Sea World aquarium and dolphinarium, where dolphins,
seals and penguins entertain and fearsome sharks frighten
(031 337 3536)
- A harbour tour, by day or night, or deep-sea cruise
to watch whales and dolphins (031 305 4022)
- Umgeni River Bird Park, one of the top three in
the world, with hundreds of indigenous and exotic
birds. (031 579 4600)
- Fitsimmons Snake Park, with its fine collection
of venomous snakes, crocodiles, leguaans and terrapins
(073 156 9606)
- The Victoria St Market, an oriental market in the
city with over 170 shops, offering good bargains
Durban Transport (031 309 5942) operates municipal bus
services throughout the city from its terminal in Pine
Street. Smaller, "cheeper" and more convenient Mynah
buses run regularly between the Berea and the Beachfront
(031 309 4126). Tuk Tuks (three-wheel, open cabs) ply
the Golden Mile and Beachfront. Minibus taxis also operate
along major routes, and there are numerous metered taxis
(see numbers below).
