Suggested Itineraries

The following itineraries are designed for travellers by car who wish to experience the scenic delights of South Africa at their own pace. Most of these attractions can be reached by air, if time is short.

If you have one week, we recommend one of the following. If you have two weeks, we suggest a combination of the Highveld & Lowveld route and one other

Highveld & Lowveld - (arriving/departing Johannesburg)

Day 1: The sights of Johannesburg

• The Roof of Africa (top of the Carlton)

Day 2: Johannesburg to Pretoria (am)

• The Union Buildings
• Voortrekker Monument

Via the NI

Pretoria to Dullstroom (pm)
Via the N4 to Belfast and the R540 to Dullstroom

Day 3: Dullstroom to Skukuza, Kruger Park
Via the R540 to Lydenburg, the Long Tom Pass (R37) to Sabie,
R536 to Hazyview

Day 4: Kruger Park - southern circuit
Via Malelane, Crocodile Bridge and Lower Sabie

Day 5: Kruger Park - central section
From Skukuza to Satara via Nwanetsi

Day 6: Satara to Pilgrim's Rest
Via Orpen Gate, the R531 to Klaserie, R40 to Graskop, the
circular drive around God's Window, R533 to Pilgrim's Rest

Day 7: Pilgrim's Rest to Johannesburg
Via the R33 to Lydenburg, R36 to Waterval Boven, N4 to
Witbank

Western Cape Spectacular - (arriving/departing Cape Town)

Day 1: A drive around the Peninsula, stopping at Groot Constantia, Via Hout Bay, Scarborough, Cape Point, Simon's Town, Fish Hoek Muizenberg and Constantia

Day 2: Visit the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront and take the ferry and tour to Robben Eiland

Day 3: Visit the National Botanic Gardens, Kirstenbosch (am)
Take the Cableway up Table Mountain (pm)

Day 4: From Cape Town to Paarl, the Franschhoek Valley and Stellenbosch. Via the N1 to Paarl, R303 to Franschhoek, R310 to Stellenbosch

Day 5: From Stellenbosch to Hermanus
Via the R44 to Gordon's Bay, Betty's Bay and Kleinmond

Day 6: From Hermanus to Montagu
Via the R326 to Bredasdorp, Cape Agulhas and Arniston,
R 319 to Swellendam, R60 to Ashton and Montagu

Day 7: From Montagu to Cape Town
Via the R60 to Worcester, R43 to Ceres and Tulbagh,
Tulbagh to Malmesbury and N7 to Cape Town

Day 4: Cape Town to Swellendam
Via Stellenbosch, Somerset West and N2 to Grabouw, Caledon

Day 5: Swellendam to Knysna
Via the N2 to Mossel Bay, George, Wilderness (with optional
detour from George to Cango Caves, Oudtshoorn, along R12)

Day 6: Knysna to Port Elizabeth
Via the N2 to Plettenberg Bay, Tsitsikamma National Park

Day 7: Port Elizabeth
Visit Addo Elephant Park, Shamwari Game Reserve (Big Five)
or laze on a Sunshine Coast beach

Via Loteni (gravel) or the R617 to Howick and N3 to Mooi River

Via the R74 to Bergville

Day 1: Durban to Umfolozi
Via North Coast and Mtubatuba along the N2

Day 2: Wildlife viewing in Umfolozi-Hluhluwe Park
Overnight in Park

Day 3: Hluhluwe to Mkuze Game Reserve, via the N2
Game viewing in late afternoon, early next morning

Day 4: Mkuze to Lake Sibaya, via Jozini, Tshongwe
Game and bird viewing on lake

Day 5: Lake Sibaya to St Lucia Wetland Park (World Heritage Site)

Day 6: St Lucia to Shakaland
Via the N3 and R68 to Eshowe, Gingindhlovu

Day 7: Shakaland to Durban
Via the N2 and Umhlanga Rocks
