Once a dusty mining town, Johannesburg is now the country's
largest city and the commercial, financial and transport
hub of the subcontinent. It's a big, brash, in your
face city - a kaleidoscope of African sights, smells,
colours, cultures and habitats - with lots to see and
do around the city, in Soweto, and further afield, including
game drives in less than an hour's drive from the CBD.
An exciting destination for a city-lover or inveterate
gambler! 2 nights in Johannesburg and perhaps an
extra night or two at Sun City...

- For a marvellous view of the city, go to the Top
of Africa, on the 50 floor of the Carlton Centre in
downtown Johannesburg.
- Spend a day at Gold Reef City, where you can tour
a gold mine, watch a gold bar being poured and relive
the gold-rush in early Johannesburg.
- Take a tour of Soweto, South Africa's most famous
township, and see Nelson Mandela's old home, Freedom
Square, Regina Mundi church, the Hector Pieterson
Memorial and other famous "struggle" sights.
- Visit Museum Afrika, in the Newtown Cultural Precinct,
for a reminder of Johannesburg's (and South Africa's)
dramatic history)
- Go shopping at Sandton City, Hyde Park, the Rosebank
Craft Market and the Oriental Plaza for some of the
best buys in Africa
- Have fun at the Randburg Waterfront, home of "shoppertainment"
- Take a drive to the Cradle of Humankind at Sterkfontein,
now a World Heritage Site, where our ancestors walked
3 million years ago.
- Go on safari to the Krugersdorp Game Reserve and
see four of the big five, or the Rhino and Lion Park.
The best way to see the city is by car or aboard the
City Slicker Bus - a hop on and off service between
the major tourist attractions and shopping centres.
Johannesburg also has a municipal bus service for suburban
travel and an extensive informal minibus taxi service
that may not always be safe for visitors. Neither service
can be relied upon at night, so a metered taxi or hired
car is recommended.

and Tourism Johannesburg, Sandton (tel 011 327 2000).
